eDiscovery Leaders Live: Julie Brown of Vorys

Julie Brown, Director of Practice Technology at Vorys, joins George Socha, Senior Vice President of Brand Awareness at Reveal, as part of a special ACEDS #eDiscoveryLeadersLive series broadcast from ILTACON 2022.

Julie is the director of practice technology at Vorys. She has worked in legal technology for more than 30 years. She has a paralegal degree and has worked in law firms and in-house litigation departments. Her experience includes managing e-discovery cases, records management, process improvement and data analytics. She manages Vorys' practice technology department which includes eDiscovery and Data Analytics teams. Julie is active in coordinating litigation technology education opportunities for the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) and served as the Conference Co-Chair for ILTACON 2019-2020. In 2020, Julie received ILTA's Contributor of the Year Award and in 2011, Julie received ILTA’s Distinguished Peer Award for Litigation and Practice Support. She is a certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS) and is certified in various legal technology platforms, the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), and Lean Six Sigma.

Julie and I only were only able to catch up briefly during day two of ILTACON – no surprise given her long tenure in leadership roles with ILTA and the concomitant demands on her time at the conference. Julie reported on day one of the conference. She then turned to a discussion about innovation: what it means to her and folks at her firm, how they are approaching innovation, and where they hope to take it.

Key Highlights

  • [2:20] So happy to be back at ILTACON.
  • [2:17] Thoughts on the conference so far.
  • [2:52] More opportunities to visit the business partners (aka vendors).
  • [3:21] What’s happening in the industry – and at Vorys.
  • [3:49] A focus on innovation at Vorys.
  • [4:05] What innovation means to them and how they are approaching it.
  • [5:27] Why an innovation day now.
  • [5:53] What comes next, after the innovation day.
  • [7:10] Their first innovation initiative – blockchain – and how they did it.

Key Quotes

    • “The sessions have been great, really well attended. The keynote was really good. I think ILTA sold out this time – that’s pretty amazing.”
    • “For me, a lot [of what is happening in the industry today” is expanding our services beyond just eDiscovery and litigation and into all the different practice areas. I’m really seeing a lot more requests for data analytics and automation.”
    • “Also [there has been] a big focus at the firm on innovation. We’re actually going to have our first innovation day at Vorys in September…. It’s going to be firmwide, in all our offices.”
    • “It’s important to say that innovation is not technology. Innovation is great ideas and how we can do things better. It can involve technology, but not necessarily.”
